  • Jaldapara National Park
The main attraction of the park is the Indian one-horned rhinoceros. The park holds the largest rhino population in India after Kaziranga National Park in Assam. Other animals in the park include Indian leopard, Indian elephant, sambar, barking deer, chital, hog deer, wild boar and gaur.

History: The area where Jaldapara National Park is located was originally inhabited by Toto and Mech tribes before being declared a game reserve in the 19th century to protect Bengal tigers. It was later announced as a sanctuary in 1941 and upgraded to a national park in 2014 with a primary focus on conserving the Indian rhinoceros population.

Flora and Fauna: The park features mainly savannah covered with tall elephant grasses and is renowned for its Indian one-horned rhinoceros population, second only to Kaziranga National Park in Assam. A variety of other animals such as leopards, elephants, deer species, wild boars, and gaurs can also be found within the park. A comprehensive study conducted between 2016-2018 documented 294 tree species belonging to 189 genera and 63 families within Jaldapara National Park.

  1. Preservation Efforts: Jaldapara National Park plays a crucial role in preserving endangered species like the Indian one-horned rhinoceros and maintaining the delicate balance of its ecosystem. The park’s elevation to a national park status underscores its commitment to conservation efforts and habitat management for wildlife.
