Gorumara National Park is a national park in northern West Bengal, India, known for its population of Indian rhinoceros. It was established in 1992 and is located in the Dooars region of the Himalayan foothills. The park covers an area of about 80 km2 and is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including large herbivores like Indian rhinoceros, gaur, Asian elephant, sloth bear, and various deer species. The park also boasts a rich birdlife with species like scarlet minivet, sunbird, Asian paradise flycatchers, and Indian hornbill.
Geography: Gorumara National Park is situated in the Malbazar subdivision of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal. It lies in the Eastern Himalayas’ submontane Terai belt and features rolling forests, riverine grasslands, and the flood plains of the Murti River and Raidak River. The Jaldhaka river, a tributary of the Brahmaputra river system, flows through the park. Gorumara is an essential watershed area between the Ganges and Brahmaputra river systems.
Flora and Fauna: The park falls within the Indomalayan realm and hosts diverse ecosystems such as Sal forests, bamboo groves, terai grasslands, and tropical riverine reeds. It is home to numerous tropical orchids. Wildlife in Gorumara includes fifty species of mammals, 194 species of birds, 22 species of reptiles, 7 species of turtles, 27 species of fish, and other macro and micro fauna. Notable mammals include Indian rhinoceroses, elephants, sloth bears, deer species, leopards, civets, mongooses, wild boar, giant squirrels, and more.
Conservation Issues: The primary conservation focus at Gorumara National Park is maintaining a viable breeding community of Indian rhinoceroses. However, challenges such as skewed populations due to lack of large predators have emerged. Issues like male dominance fights among rhinos due to altered male:female ratios and overgrazing risks from increased gaur populations are concerns for conservation efforts in the park.
This is an offbeat tour of Western Dooars. Especially recommended for travellers who want to explore a place beyond typical sightseeing. In this tour, we will not only take you to Gorumara for four nights five days which is a popular tourist destination, but we will also keep you on 2 night at Today tangta and upcoming tourist destinations that are less visited by tourists such as Samsing and Jhalong Bindu, today tangta.
