Jayanti is a small forest village located along the Jayanti River, which forms a natural border with the Bhutan hills. The village, named after the river, is popularly referred to as the “Queen of Dooars” due to its serene ambiance and pictorial view. Jayanti is approximately 30 km from Alipurduar and was once a major epicenter of mining and tea industries during British rule. However, the passenger train service that used to operate between Alipurduar Junction and Jayanti ceased in 1986 when Buxa Tiger Reserve was announced.
The present-day Jayanti village is a decaying one within a vibrant ecology. Nature has thrived here, making it an ideal leisure holiday destination away from the monotonousness of city life. The music of the swift-flowing Jayanti River, chirping of unknown birds, sweet fragrance of nature, and refreshingly cool breeze at Jayanti will make you feel completely rejuvenated. Although the river remains dry for most of the year, its white beds with pebbles all around impart an unmatched beauty to the place.
Visitors can explore nearby attractions such as Pokhari, a sacred place considered significant by both Hindus and Buddhists. The journey through Buxa Tiger Reserve to reach Jayanti is also an exciting experience where travelers can spot various wildlife species like elephants, deer, peacocks, and even leopards.
Best time to visit Jayanti is during March to June when summer dominates the region. Temperature stays between 21 to 32 degrees Celsius which is not extremely hot. Monsoon season from 15th June to 15th September should be avoided due to forest closure and inaccessibility.
This is a short tour of 2 nights and 3 days in which you will cover the most important forests of Dooars; namely Buxa,Lepchakha, jayanti and Raimatang. We start with Buxa which is the easternmost part of Dooars and end the tour with Raimatang in the western part of Dooars. If you are coming to Dooars for the first time, this will be an ideal tour for you to start exploring the region.
